  32. Installation From Disks
  33. -----------------------
  34. Before installing File DeFender you should make backup copies of all the 
  35. distribution disks.  Do not write-protect the distribution disks you use 
  36. to install File Defender. If you do, File Defender cannot be successfully 
  37. installed.
  38.  
  39. Also ensure that the Windows directory, including drive letter, is in your
  40. PATH. If the drive letter is not included in your PATH statement, File 
  41. Defender will be unable to determine where Windows resides.
  42.  
  43. SETUP.EXE is a Windows application; that is, it is run from Windows, rather
  44. than from the DOS prompt.  SETUP.EXE will only run in Windows Standard or 
  45. Enhanced mode. SETUP.EXE will NOT RUN in Real mode.  You can determine how Windows
  46. is configured on your computer by choosing About from the Help menu in the 
  47. Program Manager.

  76. To install File Defender, use Program Manager or File Manager to start 
  77. SETUP.EXE as you would any other Windows application.  For example, if 
  78. you are installing from A:
  79.  
  80.     1. Insert File Defender disk in drive a:
  81.  
  82.     1. From the Program Manager File menu, choose Run.
  83.  
  84.     2. In the Run dialog box, type A:SETUP and choose OK.
  85.  
  86.     3. Follow the instructions on the screen to enter the directory
  87.     to install File Defender.
  88.  
  89.     4. Select the Continue button.
  90.  
  91.     5. A dialog box will appear when installation is complete.
  92.

  94. SETUP.EXE will install the following files to the File Defender directory
  95. ('FD' by default):
  96.  
  97.     1. FD.EXE       - The File Defender Workfile Manager is a utility
  98.               program that provides all of the commands which
  99.               allow build, edit, open, save File Defender 
  100.               Workfiles and File Defender Errorfiles, as well as
  101.               provide a launching platform for the companion 
  102.               program FDefend.
  103.  
  104.     2. FDEFEND.EXE  - FDefend is the utility program that performs all 
  105.               of the protection functions (checksums, etc) on 
  106.               File Defender Workfiles, as well as create File
  107.               Defender Errorfiles.
  108.  
  109.     3. FDSCHED.EXE  - The File Defender Scheduler is a versatile 
  110.               scheduling utility used to launch FDefend at a 
  111.               specified time completely unattended.  The 
  112.               schedulers versatility allows it to be used with 
  113.               any Windows program or Non-Windows Application and
  114.               can can be configured to run programs by certain 
  115.               intervals, certain days or one time only.
  116.  
  117.     4. FDREG.EXE    - The File Defender registration program is used to 
  118.               register your copy of File Defender.  Once you are
  119.               registered this program can be erased from your 
  120.                                   system.

  122.     5. DEFENDER.HLP - The help File for File Defender.

  124.     6. FDSCHED.HLP  - The help File for File Defender Scheduler.

  140. Installation From Downloaded Compressed File

  143. At the DOS prompt:

  145.     1. Uncompress DEFENDER.ZIP using PKUNZIP DEFENDER. Decompression
  146.        should produce the following files in the current directory:
  147.  
  148.        FD.EXE       - The File Defender Workfile Manager.
  149.        FDEFEND.EXE  - FDefend is the utility program that performs all 
  150.               of the protection functions.

  174.        [windows directory] is an optional parameter to supply if
  175.        Windows is found under a subdirectory other than the default
  176.        directory of WINDOWS.

  179.        installation.

  181.     3. Start Windows, click on the Control Menu Box and select New and
  182.        Program Group. Type in FILEDEFE.GRP and click on OK.

  188. Using File Defender
  189. -------------------

  191. To use File Defender effectively:

  193.     1. Select and save files using the File Defender Workfile manager.
  194.  
  195.     2. Use the File Defender scheduler to run FDefend (FDEFEND.EXE)
  196.         with files saved in step 1.

  198.     3. Refer to File Defender Online help to discover more about
  199.         File Defender and its uses.

  224.         directory to report the status after FDefend ('FDEFEND.EXE') ran.

  249. Instructions to Register File Defender via COMPUSERVE
  250. -----------------------------------------------------

  252. If you are a member of COMPUSERVE you may register File Defender online.
  253.  
  254. To begin, select "Register Shareware" from the menu.  A list
  255. of search criteria will be displayed to you. Enter 565 under
  256. option #1 on the search criteria menu. You will then navigate
  257. directly to File Defender's description.
  258.  
  259. You will then be prompted "Would You Like to Register? (Y/N)." 
  260.  
  261. Read the description carefully to verify that you wish to register
  262. the program. The description details the program, its capabilities,
  263. and the benefits of registration. Be sure to note the program's
  264. registration fee. When you register any program, the registration fee
  265. is charged to your CompuServe account. 
  266.  
  267. Enter "Y" at the prompt to register; enter "N" at the prompt to
  268. ensure that you do not register the program, and to return to the
  269. previous menu.  When you enter "Y" to register, you will be prompted
  270. to enter your full name, company name (optional), your complete
  271. address, your phone number (optional) and the total number of copies
  272. of File Defender that you wish to register. When you finish entering
  273. this information, you can VIEW, CHANGE, SEND or CANCEL it.

  275. Select VIEW to confirm that the information you entered is correct.
  276. Select CHANGE to edit any of the information you entered. Select SEND
  277. to complete your registration, receive a detail of your total
  278. charges, and to send the information to the author. Select CANCEL to
  279. cancel registration of the program.

  287. Part 4: Evaluation Agreement
  288. ============================================================================
  289. File Defender is not and has never been public domain software, nor is it 
  290. free software. Non-licensed users are granted a limited license to use 
  291. File Defender on a 15-day trial basis for the purpose of determining whether
  292. File Defender is suitable for their needs.  The use of File Defender, except
  293. for the initial 15-day trial, requires registration.  The use of unlicensed
  294. copies of File Defender by any person, business, corporation, government 
  295. agency or any other entity is strictly prohibited.  A single user license 
  296. permits a user to use File Defender only on a single computer at a time.
  297.  
  298. No one may modify or patch the File Defender executable files in any way,
  299. including but not limited to decompiling, disassembling, or otherwise 
  300. reverse engineering the program.
  301.  
  302. A limited license is granted to copy and distribute File Defender only 
  303. for the trial use of others, subject to the above limitations, and also 
  304. the following:
  305.  
  306.       1.  File Defender must be copied in unmodified form, complete 
  307.     with the file containing this license information.
  308.  
  309.       2. File Defender may not be distributed in conjunction with 
  310.     any other product without a specific license to do so from 
  311.     B&S Graphical Computer Systems.

  313.       3. No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested or 
  314.     accepted, except as authorized below:

  316.     A) Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (sysops) 
  317.         may make File Defender available for downloading as long
  318.         as the above conditions are met. An overall or time-
  319.         dependent charge for the use of the bulletin board system 
  320.         is permitted as long as there is not a specific charge for 
  321.         the download of File Defender.
  322.  
  323.     B) Vendors of user-supported or shareware software approved 
  324.         by the ASP may distribute File Defender, subject to the 
  325.         above conditions, without specific permission. Non-approved
  326.         vendors may distribute File Defender only after obtaining
  327.         written permission from B&S Graphical Computer Systems.  
  328.             Such permission is usually granted.  Vendors may charge a
  329.         reasonable disk duplication and handling fee.

  332. Part 5: Warranties and Disclaimer
  333. ===========================================================================

  335. LIMITED WARRANTY
  336. ----------------
  337. B&S Graphical Computer Systems guarantees your satisfaction with this 
  338. product for a period of 90 days from the date of original purchase.  
  339. If you are unsatisfied with File Defender within that time period, 
  340. return the package in saleable condition to the place of purchase 
  341. for a full refund.  B&S Graphical Computer Systems warrants that 
  342. all disks provided are free from defects in material and workmanship, 
  343. assuming normal use, for a period of 90 days from the date of purchase.
  344.  
  345. B&S Graphical Computer Systems warrants that the program will perform 
  346. in substantial compliance with the documentation supplied with the 
  347. software product.  If a significant defect in the product is found, 
  348. the Purchaser may return the product for a refund.  In no event will 
  349. such a refund exceed the purchase price of the product.
  350.  
  351. EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, B&S GRAPHICAL COMPUTER SYSTEMS DISCLAIMS 
  352. ALL WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED 
  353. TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR 
  354. PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO THE PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE 
  355. DEFECTIVE, THE PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE ENTIRE COST OF
  356. ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR CORRECTION AND ANY INCIDENTAL OR 
  357. CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.  IN NO EVENT WILL B&S GRAPHICAL COMPUTER 
  358. SYSTEMS BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER INCLUDING WITHOUT 
  359. LIMITATION DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION,
  360. LOSS OF BUSINESS INFORMATION AND THE LIKE) ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR 
  361. THE INABILITY TO USE THIS PRODUCT EVEN IF B&S GRAPHICAL COMPUTER 
  362. SYSTEMS HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. THIS
  363. LIMITED WARRANTY GIVES YOU SPECIFIC LEGAL RIGHTS.
